Upcoming events in the history department

Commemorating the Mayflower voyage of 1620.

The history department is very excited about the prospect of celebrating the 400 years anniversary of the Mayflower next year.  The Mayflower ship set sail from the London homeport of Rotherhithe in July 1620 with 65 passengers on board and travelled to Southampton.  Before they departed from Southwark, it is believed that they attended a religious ceremony in the Mayflower garden on the site of St. Saviour’s and St Olave’s School.  The Mayflower finally left England on 6 September 1620 and arrived in the Plymouth Colony (modern day Massachusetts) on 9 November 1620.

The history department plans to organise a programme for our sixth form students to research in more detail the significance of the SSSO school site, and to produce case studies of the different types of people who left Southwark on the Mayflower using the local archives.  Their findings will form the basis of a special whole school assembly and a ‘voices from the past’ roleplay with speeches from a range of passengers who left England for the New World.  This will be performed in the Mayflower Garden as part of a special evening of celebration to mark the occasion.
