Key Stage 4
As you will see from our results on our opening page we are a successful department within the school and have a high uptake at GCSE, with a large number of students opting to take one of the subjects we offer. All of the staff in the department run extra curricular sessions in support of their studies. The excellent facilities within the department mean that the students’ creativity is rarely hindered by a lack of resources.
At Key Stage 4 we are delighted to be able to offer 3 different courses:
- GCSE Resistant Materials
- GCSE Food Technology
GCSE Course Structure
All three of the courses we offer; Food Technology, Resistant Materials and Engineering follow the same structure; made up of 60% coursework which is in the form of a controlled assessment and 40% examination. Pupils start the controlled assessment towards the end of year 10, completing it in year 11. The task is an individual set project, which leads to pupils making a product from the testing and trialling of design ideas. This takes the pupils through the whole design process of a product, of their choice.
Technology and Engineering courses also equip pupils with a good range of transferable skills:
- Self management
- Problem solving
