Year 7 Transition

Starting secondary school is an exciting milestone, and at St Saviour’s and St Olave’s School, we are committed to making the transition to Year 7 as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Our dedicated staff, welcoming environment, and tailored support programs help students feel confident and ready for this new chapter. From orientation activities to pastoral care, we ensure every student settles in, builds friendships, and thrives in their learning journey.

We are delighted that you are now “Heirs of the Past, Children of the Present, Makers of the Future"!

Welcome to Year 7: Meet Your Director of Learning!

Year 6 Stepping Up Event (March)

Our Stepping Up Event, held in March shortly after secondary school places are confirmed, is the first opportunity for families to begin their journey with us.

This welcoming evening is designed to help students and parents feel part of our school community from the very start. Families are invited to explore a wide range of curriculum and pastoral stands, meet key staff, and speak to current students about their experiences.

Students can get a first taste of secondary school subjects through interactive activities, while parents can ask questions and gain a clearer understanding of school life in a relaxed and supportive environment. There is also a welcome address from senior staff, helping to set the tone for the transition ahead.

The event focuses on:

  • Building early relationships with staff and student ambassadors
  • Reducing anxiety around transition
  • Giving a first insight into learning, enrichment and school opportunities

This is an exciting first step in helping students feel confident, welcomed and ready for the move to secondary school.

Year 6 Head Start Event (May)

Our Head Start Event, held in May, is designed to provide families with the key knowledge and practical guidance needed to prepare for September.

During this event, parents and students receive detailed information about school expectations, routines, and daily life. This includes guidance on uniform, equipment, behaviour expectations, homework systems and communication processes.

Families are introduced to our pastoral structure, including form tutors and support staff, and gain a clear understanding of how we support students both academically and emotionally. The event also includes interactive discussion activities, where parents can explore common transition challenges such as managing homework, supporting wellbeing and helping their child build resilience.

The Head Start Event focuses on:

  • Providing clarity around expectations and school systems
  • Equipping parents to support their child effectively
  • Building confidence in navigating secondary school life
  • Strengthening the partnership between home and school

By the end of the evening, families leave feeling informed and well-prepared for the transition ahead.

Year 6 Transition Day (July)

Our Transition Day, held in July, gives students the opportunity to experience a full day in the life of a Year 7 student.

Students spend the day in their new form groups, meet their teachers, and take part in a range of lessons across different subjects. The day begins with a welcome assembly and includes a mix of classroom learning, social time, and opportunities to explore the school environment.

They will:

  • Take part in real secondary school lessons
  • Experience moving around the school site
  • Meet teachers and new classmates
  • Enjoy break and lunch routines
  • Ask questions and reflect on their day

This experience is invaluable in helping students feel comfortable, confident and excited about starting in September. It ensures that when they return in the Autumn, they already feel familiar with the school, routines and expectations.
