The Rt Reverend Dr Michael Ipgrave visits SSSO

"No one has greater love than this, to lay down ones life for ones friends."

This verse from John's Gospel was central to the message we received from The Rt Reverend Dr Michael Ipgrave as he spoke in whole school assembly. The Bishop was visiting school to address us on the nature of sacrifice in the week that we remembered those lives lost in war, one hundred years after the beginning of World War I. Following the assembly, the year 7 students were each presented with a Bible by Bishop Michael.

One particularly powerful element was the true World War II story of Maximilian Kolbe who, upon hearing that ten prisoners in Auschwitz were arbitrarily going to be starved to death as a punishment for someone else's actions, chose to volunteer to take the place of one of the ten. Kolbe's willingness to give his life showed the ultimate sacrifice - one that clearly echoes back to the life and death of Christ.

Following the assembly, the year 7 students were each presented with a Bible by Bishop Michael. These were kindly donated by the Governors, and students used them immediately as they were encouraged to look up and remember the key verse from the assembly. We hope the Bibles will remain a treasured possession of all our girls, and will be used for years to come!
